There is more than one way to fillet a fish and the same goes for installing the poly on your greenhouse. Below is just one method to help you get an idea of how the process goes:

When considering expanding your grow space there are a thousand things to consider. We’re going to tackle five different solutions. As we know, energy costs are a large drain on the profit margin, but there are other options to consider instead of, “that’s how we’ve always done it.” For example, at Laughing Stock Farm, in Freeport, Maine, the owners have switched their heat source to cooking oil from local restaurants. The restaurants give the oil away because otherwise they have to pay to have it removed. Great idea, right?

A common misconception in reducing labor costs is that you have to reduce your staff. Not true. When we talk about reducing labor costs, it’s really the labor cost per plant. The suggestions that we are making are to help your staff and optimize their time and energies while working. There are three ways that we have found most effective when talking to our customers.

Recommended Practices Concerning Film Greenhouse Covering
- Except for greenhouse covering expressly known to be manufactured for greenhouse use, no polyethylene or other film should be used as glazing, for covering any greenhouse or for any similar purpose.
- Single layers of film may not be sufficiently resistant to wind stress of impact. Therefore, it is recommended that two layers, air inflated to .2-.3 inches of water pressure measured on a manometer be used. Outside air should be used for inflation because of its lower cold weather moisture content. Inflation air should not be directed perpendicularly or nearly perpendicularly at the film but obliquely to it.

Check it out and Check it off: Greenhouse Spring Cleaning
Many cultures have used spring cleaning as a way to prepare their houses for their new year. My new favorite is the Chinese tradition of sweeping their floors and cleaning their homes to cleanse it of the bad luck and misfortunes that may have accumulated during the past year. Once the house is clean, there is a prohibition against sweeping for a few days after the New Year to prevent removing any good luck or fortune that came in with the turning of the year. Prohibiting cleaning? Count me in.

There are many checklists and how-to’s written about greenhouse maintenance. More often than not they are generic and mundane. Most lists are geared towards someone having the ideal time of year to grab a check list and do a head to toe walk-through of the greenhouse. This may be wanted, it may even be possible but it usually ends up on the back burner. The approach for this “maintenance” article is to not only explain what needs maintenance at the greenhouse but also what parts and pieces are typically needed and in a format that is easy to reference when the time comes.
