It’s the end of your growing season or the end of the school year. You won’t be using the greenhouse for a few months but can you “shut down” a greenhouse? We believe that a greenhouse is more than a building. It is a growing machine and the heart of your business.

Ambition is the American Way. It drives us to do and create great things in the face of overwhelming obstacles and competition. You know the names: Carnegie, Rockefeller, Ford, Buffet, Gates and Jobs. Although ambition often has a negative connotation and does have a dark side, when harnessed and channeled, it drives us to do amazing things. But only when we act. In the world of startups and Shark Tank it seems like it everyone is looking for that one good idea to turn their dreams into an early retirement. However, have you ever wondered why, if it was so easy, more people haven’t made it? I talk to a lot of aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners every week, and I can tell within the first 5 minutes who are the dreamers and who are the doers. The dreamers can inspire you with their passion, talk to you for days about what their business will look like in the future, and have an unending supply of energy. What is missing? The plan to connect their current state to their desired future state. This is where the doers shine. They tend to have the same passion but a more realistic view of future state and a dialed in plan for how they will get there.
Caution: All work on heating equipment should be performed by qualified service personnel.

When considering expanding your grow space there are a thousand things to consider. We’re going to tackle five different solutions. As we know, energy costs are a large drain on the profit margin, but there are other options to consider instead of, “that’s how we’ve always done it.” For example, at Laughing Stock Farm, in Freeport, Maine, the owners have switched their heat source to cooking oil from local restaurants. The restaurants give the oil away because otherwise they have to pay to have it removed. Great idea, right?

A common misconception in reducing labor costs is that you have to reduce your staff. Not true. When we talk about reducing labor costs, it’s really the labor cost per plant. The suggestions that we are making are to help your staff and optimize their time and energies while working. There are three ways that we have found most effective when talking to our customers.

Recommended Practices Concerning Film Greenhouse Covering
- Except for greenhouse covering expressly known to be manufactured for greenhouse use, no polyethylene or other film should be used as glazing, for covering any greenhouse or for any similar purpose.
- Single layers of film may not be sufficiently resistant to wind stress of impact. Therefore, it is recommended that two layers, air inflated to .2-.3 inches of water pressure measured on a manometer be used. Outside air should be used for inflation because of its lower cold weather moisture content. Inflation air should not be directed perpendicularly or nearly perpendicularly at the film but obliquely to it.
